One of the memories that stands out for me of growing up is the glorious days of Shazzie pushing me in my pusher only to be foiled every 10 minutes or so by one of her friends stopping for a 'quick' chat. This would happen continually for the entire walk. After alot of huffing and puffing I was reduced to sitting there stonily until their catching up was done. Every time.

I recently read Luke Pearsons latest graphic novel 'Hilda and the Midnight Giant.' If you like your reading to be original yet whimsical and appealing to the eye, you should check out this book as well as Luke's other work. He's easily one of the best graphic novelists out there today.
And or course, after reading 'Hilda' I couldn't resist drawing up some fanart of her and a couple of her friends.

One of the nicest things an adult did for me as a kid was when my beloved nanna Jean, used to let me pour stones into a cup & she would pretend to drink them. We both knew that it was just pretend but we never discussed it, and every Saturday afternoon without fail, we would go through the familiar motions with those old plastic cups. Bless her.

Recently in the news Leisha Hailey and her partner and bandmate Camila Grey were told to stop kissing each other on Southwest Airlines as they were told it was a 'family airline' and that they had had complaints from fellow passengers. Good grief.
Hard to believe such incidences are still happening in 2011 and that people are still holding this ignorant view.
Anyway, I'm not very good with articulating myself in words at the best of times so I've let my pen did the talking instead : )

This happened to me a few months ago while I was on the phone to a cable company. The last panel may be a little exaggerated though ; ) I did get off the phone with whoever was on the other end of the line still convinced I had a baby no matter what I tried to say. And just so you know, I hate when people talk 'baby talk' to their pets (& children) I seem to be quite flexible with allowing myself to do it when the occasion presents itself though.

So I had a little Angry Birds obsession that last a month or two eariler this year where I would find myself playing the game in bed at 2AM, on the toilet, in shopping lines-wherever I could appease my fix. Nevertheless when I heard it was bird week over at the Bear and the Buffalo I knew what kind of bird(s) I wanted to draw.

The Doomasaurus was ridiculed for his predicition of his entire species being wiped out. As unfortunately for him, and every other dinosaur, the Doomasaurus was always prediciting one calamity after another given his gloomy, dull persona, so this was deemed just another negative theory. The Doomasaurus was known to mate for life, & enjoy the occasional crossword in his spare time when he wasn't prediciting life ending as he knew it.

Not much is known of the Depressasaurus as it's a newly found species of dinosaur. It was known for it's blue skin and forlorn gaze, with it's skin even thought to have changed a darker shade of blue in the colder months. Was known to be quite a solitary species which fed on grass and fallen flowers.

Pens I Like to Use

A few people have asked me recently what pens I use to ink with. The main pen I use is a Faber Castell Pitt brush pen which helps me with definition and thick/thin lines. The second is the Artline 210 which I use to block in colour and to help me with the steadier lines. And I always use the Uni Pin fineliner pens, ranging from 02all the way up to 08 for my more finer lines.

I've been visiting my local pet shop lately as I've fallen in love with a Scottish Fold kitten up there. I realised this was becoming a problem when I was standing there mesmerised for several minutes as he was digging around in his litter & stumbling over his own poo. That and also the fact that I'd befriended two people in the last few days since I was spending so much time there, both aged over 60.

Louis painting

I studied fine arts a few years ago, but never really took to it, as whenever I painted I seemed to miss drawing. Anyway, I hadn't painted on canvas for over three years & with all the drawing I've been doing of late, I had an inkling to get out the ol canvas and brushes and let my hands get messy with paint. Louis was an easy choice of subject to paint since animals feature so heavily in my art and I also have the conveience of having stacks of photos for reference. Anyway, along with my mistake of combining acrylic and gouache together (a no no I later found out) I struggled with this painting and I think it shows. Along with my initial mistake which made the gouache constantly bleed into the acrylic, I also found the canvas scratchy and the I didn't like the feel of the brush on canvas. I much prefer the ease of ink gliding on paper and I don't seem to have that same sense of blind loss drawing that I have when I paint. Never the less, there were aspects I enjoyed and I just plain liked the fact it was a break from drawing the usual. Anyway, a lesson was learnt and while I'm not saying I won't be picking up a brush ever again, painting always seems to remind me what my first love is...drawing!

I was looking through my old drawings I did as a kid quite recently and this particular image stood out to me. It's of a shark surfing, holding a can of beer while doing the thumbs up sign. Behind him is a screaming woman. The drawing was created in 1987 when I was 9 and shows the things I was interested in back then and what I thought was cool. Anyway, I decided to draw the image again as a 32 year old in 2011 and see the difference. They are quite apparent, although I think my 80's (finless) shark looks quite a bit cockier with his gummy mouth and stumpy little fins. I've blessed the girl with a bit more of a current do. I have a feeling the woman from 1987 may have been inspired by my beloved old Barbie doll, Magic Curl.

Anyone who has followed my art for more than a few years will know I used to have a cat called Edith who was constantly inspiring my art. Sadly she passed away a couple of years ago but I still think of her alot. Since the end of last year I've been busy working on some designs for a game called 'Hooves of Fire.' It's a fun, interactive horse racing game which can be quite addictive as I've found out! So far I've been drawing background elements as well as designing some of the horse characters which has been really fun. I've posted two of the designs who are Albert Einstallion & The Shopkeeper. Melanie Mathews, Ben Wood and myself have started a weekly drawing challenge where every Friday we take it in turns to suggest something for us all to draw. This week Melanie has suggested 'kittens.' If you're familiar with my work, you'll know this isn't too far out of my comfort zone. At all.
So I picked up a brush and got my gouache out last night and painted this kitten. It seems Louis, my cat, was a heavy influence here.

Another painting just finished. I decided tonight to do another one as I didn't have the best experience with my last painting & didn't want to wait too long before I did another one as I probably wouldn't try again at all if I didn't. A splash of photoshop with the sky as you could see all the brushstrokes in the original. Not too pretty.
